The Skrill have destroyed Earth and now pursue the last Humans. Sixteen survive. And Ephraim Halliday must find a reason for all of them to stay alive, to give birth to a new humanity in far-off Andromeda Galaxy. But will any of them survive the pursuing Skrill, who attack them on both physical and psychic levels? As they battle their pursuers, Ephraim will discover whether sensual love or raw power will lead the last Humans to a new tomorrow. In that battle he will be helped by the spirits of eight billion dead and the gods and goddesses of ancient Earth. For they too travel with the survivors, the living avatars of humanity.

Ehpraim Halliday is the Social Systems Officer on board a spaceship that is taking the last surviving members of the human race far away to another galaxy, after the annihilation of planet Earth. An alien species, known as the Skrill, has destroyed the planet and, even now, pursue the refugees into space. The humans on board are shell-shocked and grieving. It is Ephraim's job to instill a sense of peace and community amongst the survivors, and it is his learned opinion that the fastest, easiest way to do this is through deep love and sexual bonding. This is a hard thing to do, however, with such disparate personalities- all of whom are guilt-stricken with the loss of their loved ones, their species and their home world...
not to mention the fact that the Skrill are after them still, AND they are constantly being visited by the old Gods and the new from Earth!
Positives- This is, as always with Mr. King's novels, beautifully written and edited.
It is also extremely well researched and plotted. Whew- you will learn a lot about different religions, philosophies, and cultures by reading this book!
Negatives- There is a lot of sexual content- this is not necessarily a negative, but it is a rider- if you are on the prudish side- this novel might not be your cup of tea.
Also, the science is VERY advanced- it was over my head in many places- although true techies will adore this aspect of Galactic Avatar!
I give this fine novel 4 stars, because I really had to work at understanding it in some places. Of course, this speaks to my ignorance, not this author's story or his skill in telling it.

Galactic Avatar T Jackson King 9781617206573 Books Reviews
I for one do not care about that portion of the story. Yes it seems everyone is sexually explicitly involved with everyone else. That is fine and in this case does not take away from the story. One thing I noted is so many authors use a cloud of Mercury particles to ward off a laser beam. WHY? No one in the Astronomical society that has ever built a telescope would be so stupid. Ok let's use current reflector based telescopes. One of the very last things they would do is coat the mirror with a shiny coat of ALuminum. It is the most reflective substance they could use. They can form it into tiny little mirrors that would reflect all but the smallest portion of the beam. Thus saving any and all.
dray
I'm sorry for the time I lost reading this book. I should've known better, after not having liked his "Earth Vs. Aliens". Just ... why exactly is this SciFi? This is equal parts boredom, repeating things over, overacting characters and occultism. Really - if humanity ever faces doom and the BEST we can put together are those 16 specimens? Then by all means, kill us off - the universe will be a much better place. Please, Mr T. Jackson King, stick with digging stuff up or whatever you do in Archeology and leave book writing to authors.
The opening pages of this book almost put me off, but once I got going, I couldnt put it down. Once you get past the techobabble and some of the character interaction early on, the underlying story is riveting, and the final revelations are mind blowing. In a spiritual sense, this book taps into the earliest form of spirituality, and truely could be telling the story of how man began on this planet. But then, the best historical channeling has been in fiction form.
I did enjoy this book. It got a little into the religious stuff at times, but the strength of the characters and the depth of the plot carries you through it. Yes, there is sex, and more sex, but not porno! It is done in good taste and is actually necessary to the plot. Can you imagine, this story STARTS with the end of our world!!! Kinda makes you wonder doesn't it? Great read.
Great read. Best for people with an interest in anthropology as it is a strong theme in the book
Without giving away too much about this SF novel with an epic vision, I'll just say that in relation to its title, its scope is wide and truly vivid.
I was swept up in the character of Ephraim Halliday from the start, and enjoyed following the way he anchored a disparate (and variably desperate) group of sixteen women and men of different races, nations, religions and sexual persuasions through the 'eye' of a 'holistic cultural technician' whose purpose - and huge challenge - is to create and maintain this tiny handful of survivors of humanity's demise into a functional, bonded group. Love relationships and sexual bonding become the glue of a fragile group experiencing post-traumatic tensions. At the same time, pursuit by the aliens who destroyed humankind forces them to embody Earth's mythologies, with intriguing results.
I got to the end of Galactic Avatar with my imagination firing as to 'what happens from here'. Kudos to the author for getting me so involved in this story!
Five stars.
Most good SF poses the question "What if ____?", and then sets out to explore the limits of some possible answers in intriguing ways. Galactic Avatar is no exception. Set within the extreme context of an alien first contact rapidly followed by the near-complete destruction of the Earth's population, and an intergalactic alien pursuit of the few remaining humans, one question this engaging story examines is if and how a tiny group of people ripped away from home, family, and culture can create and construct new systems of personal meaning, morality, and functional social structures in the face of such drastic loss. Another is the perhaps unexpected extent to which the archetypal patterns and energies of the collective unconscious might play a role in the ultimate resolution of questions of human nature and survival. This is a story for people not afraid to look beyond the narrow limits of transmitted culture to see how core human drives might play out in extreme circumstances. As one would expect in a novel dealing with these themes, sexual situations play a significant role in the story. That the author manages to weave the exploration of these topics into and through an exciting humans vs. aliens first contact SF story is a gift to all of us who love the genre.
